Cubic yards to tons — converting a gravel volume to a supplier ton order
The calculator gives cubic yards; the yard sells tons. Density bridges them: tons = yd³ × (lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000. A cubic yard is not a fixed tonnage — crusher run and pea gravel ≈1.35 t/yd³, #57 stone ≈1.24, light lava rock ≈0.63. Multiply your yards by the material’s tons-per-yard.
What this diagram shows
A conversion diagram from cubic yards to tons for bulk gravel. The calculator produces a volume in cubic yards (one cubic yard is 3 by 3 by 3 feet, or 27 cubic feet), but bulk yards sell gravel by weight, the ton. Density bridges the two: tons equal cubic yards times pounds per cubic yard divided by 2,000. Because density varies by material, a cubic yard is not a fixed number of tons — crusher run and pea gravel run about 2,700 pounds per cubic yard (1.35 tons), #57 crushed stone about 2,470 (1.24 tons), and light lava rock only about 1,250 (0.63 tons). Multiply the cubic yards by the material’s tons-per-yard to get the ton order.
