Concrete & Rebar

How many bags of concrete are in a cubic yard — 45 eighty-pound bags or 60 sixty-pound bags

A cubic yard is 27 ft³, so it takes 45 × 80-lb bags (yield 0.60 ft³ each) or 60 × 60-lb bags (0.45 ft³ each). Past about ½ yard — roughly 25 bags — ordering a ready-mix truck beats mixing by hand.

What this diagram shows

A diagram converting concrete volume to bags. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. An 80-pound bag of concrete mix yields about 0.60 cubic feet, so 27 divided by 0.60 is 45 bags per cubic yard; a 60-pound bag yields about 0.45 cubic feet, so 27 divided by 0.45 is 60 bags per cubic yard. A gauge shows when to stop bagging and order ready-mix: small jobs up to about half a cubic yard, roughly 25 eighty-pound bags, are practical to mix by hand, while bigger pours should be delivered as ready-mix to avoid cold joints and hours of mixing.
