Why vinyl plank is bought by the carton, not the square foot
Vinyl plank ships in cartons that each cover a fixed square footage — commonly 20–30 sq ft, but it varies by plank size and brand, so the number on your box is the one that matters. You take your floor area, add a waste factor for cuts, then divide by that carton coverage and round up. Pattern is the biggest lever: a straight-lay floor scraps ~8%, while herringbone can push past 15%.
Rows are staggered so end joints never line up — that stagger consumes the off-cuts from the end of one row as the start of the next, which is why realistic waste is a range, not a single number. Rigid-core SPC/WPC often arrives with an attached pad (skip the separate underlayment), and any install over concrete still needs a 6-mil vapor barrier underneath.
Calculation Formulas
Sum each room rectangle. L-shaped rooms are entered as two rooms and added.
Example:
A 15 × 12 living room + 10 × 10 hall = 180 + 100 = 280 sq ft.
Layout pattern sets the base (straight 8%, diagonal 13%, herringbone 15%); room complexity adds 0/2.5/7.5%; DIY adds 5%.

Straight-lay, moderate room, DIY = 8 + 2.5 + 5 = 15.5% waste.
The square footage you actually buy, including cuts and culls.
Example:
280 sq ft × 1.10 = 308 sq ft to purchase.
Rounded up to whole cartons using the coverage printed on your box (typically 20–30 sq ft).

Thin foam/cork rolls cover ~100 sq ft. Skipped entirely when the plank has an attached pad.

A 6-mil (≥150 µm) polyethylene film is required over concrete for rising-damp protection, seams overlapped 6–8 in.

Full-spread LVT adhesive averages ~200 sq ft/gal, but spread rate is trowel-driven — verify the adhesive TDS.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many boxes of vinyl plank flooring do I need?
Take your floor area, add a waste factor (about 8% for straight-lay, 10–15% for diagonal, 15%+ for herringbone), then divide by the coverage printed on your carton — commonly 20–30 sq ft — and round up. For a 280 sq ft room at 24 sq ft/carton with 10% waste, that's 308 ÷ 24 = 13 cartons. Always enter your actual box coverage, since it varies by brand and plank size.
What's the difference between LVP, SPC, and WPC?
All three are luxury vinyl plank. LVP is the flexible original. SPC (stone-plastic composite) has a dense, rigid mineral core that's dimensionally stable and hides minor subfloor flaws. WPC (wood-plastic composite) is a softer, warmer rigid core. SPC and WPC usually ship with an attached pad and are the most common floating floors today; flexible LVP is often glued down.
Do I need underlayment under vinyl plank?
Only if you're floating a plank that does NOT have an attached pad — then use a thin (1–1.5 mm) foam or cork rated for rigid vinyl. Most SPC/WPC comes with an attached pad, so you skip the separate roll (double-padding voids most warranties). Over concrete you still need a 6-mil poly vapor barrier underneath regardless of the pad, per MMFA Technical Bulletin TB2.
What waste factor should I use for vinyl plank?
About 5–10% for a straight or brick-lay pattern in a simple rectangular room, 10–15% for a diagonal layout, and 15–20% for herringbone or chevron. Add a few points for cut-up rooms with lots of doorways and closets, and about 5% more if it's your first DIY install. The calculator applies these automatically based on your layout and complexity choices.
Can I install vinyl plank over concrete?
Yes — vinyl plank is a top choice for slabs, including below grade. Test the slab for moisture (ASTM F2170), make sure it's flat to about 3/16" per 10 ft (ASTM F710), and lay a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier before a floating floor. Rigid-core SPC is preferred over flexible LVP below grade for dimensional stability.
How big is the expansion gap for vinyl plank?
Leave a 1/4" gap at every wall and fixed object for floating floors, and 1/2" for large floating areas over about 2,500 sq ft, per COREtec's install guides. Quarter round or shoe molding covers the gap. Never fasten the trim to the floor — it has to move.
