Why laminate is bought by the box, not the square foot
Laminate ships in cartons that each cover a fixed square footage — typically 18–24 sq ft, but it varies by plank size, so the number on your box is the one to use. Take your floor area, add a waste factor for cuts, divide by that carton coverage, and round up. Pattern is the biggest lever: a straight-lay floor scraps about 8%, while herringbone can push past 15%.
Unlike vinyl, laminate always floats and always needs a separate underlayment (unless the plank has an attached pad), plus a 6-mil vapor barrier over concrete. It also moves more with humidity, so it needs a longer 48–96 hour acclimation and a bigger 3/8" expansion gap around the room.

How many boxes of laminate do I need?
Take your floor area, add a waste factor (about 8% straight-lay, 12–15% diagonal, 15–20% herringbone), then divide by the coverage printed on your carton — commonly 18–24 sq ft — and round up. For a 280 sq ft room at 20 sq ft/box with 10% waste, that's 308 ÷ 20 = 16 boxes. Always use your actual box coverage, since it varies by plank size.
How many boxes of laminate for a 12x12 room?
A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft. Add ~10% waste for a straight lay = about 158 sq ft, then divide by your box coverage. At 20 sq ft/box that's 8 boxes; at 24 sq ft/box, 7. Round up and keep the spare for repairs.
Do I need underlayment under laminate?
Almost always. Laminate is a floating floor and needs a separate foam or cork underlayment to cushion it and quiet it — unless the plank comes with an attached pad, in which case you skip it (double-padding voids the warranty). Over concrete you also need a 6-mil vapor barrier, or an underlayment with one built in, per Pergo.
What waste factor should I use for laminate?
About 5–10% for a straight or running-bond layout, 12–15% for diagonal, and 15–20% for herringbone or chevron. Add a few points for cut-up rooms and about 5% more for a first-time DIY install. The calculator applies these automatically from your layout and complexity choices.
How long does laminate need to acclimate?
Lay the unopened cartons flat in the room where they'll be installed for 48–96 hours (Pergo Installation Essentials), so the planks reach the room's temperature and humidity. Skipping acclimation is the most common cause of gapping and peaking after install.
How big is the expansion gap for laminate?
Leave a 3/8" gap at every wall and doorway — bigger than vinyl needs, because laminate's wood-composite core moves more with humidity. Quarter round or shoe molding covers it. Nail the trim to the wall, never to the floor, and don't caulk the gap.
What does the AC rating mean?
AC (Abrasion Class) rates the wear layer: AC3 handles normal residential traffic, AC4 suits light commercial and busy homes, and AC5 is for commercial spaces. It affects durability, not the quantity you buy — match it to your room's traffic. Note the AC rating is marketed separately from the ANSI/NALFA LF-01 performance standard.
