Calculation Formulas
The ship-lapped edge overlaps the next sheet, so a 4-ft sheet only exposes about 47.5 inches of wall.
Example:
48" nominal − ~0.5" lap = 47.5" net → 3.96 ft per column.
Sheets nest across the wall at the net width and stack up the height; ceiling captures the rip cuts.
Example:
30 ft ÷ 3.96 = 8 columns; 9 ft ÷ 8 = 2 rows → 16 sheets on that wall.
Nesting count plus gable area plus a small plywood breakage allowance (plywood is more forgiving than fiber cement).
Example:
16 + 2 gable + 1 breakage = 19 sheets.
Every horizontal butt joint on a multi-row wall needs Z-flashing the full width of the wall.
Example:
Two rows on a 30-ft wall → 1 joint × 30 ft = 30 LF of Z-flashing.
Galvanized siding nails at ~6" o.c. on edges and ~12" o.c. in the field, at roughly 140 8d nails per pound.

Shiplap, Z-Flashing & Thickness
The shiplap edge is the weather joint — lap it, don't butt it tight. Keep the bottom edge 6–8 inches above grade and 2 inches above roofs and decks, with a drainage gap so the panel can dry. Z-flashing is required at every horizontal butt joint; the upper panel laps over it. Prime all edges and maintain the finish — plywood siding fails from the edges and unmaintained faces, not the field. For 8-foot walls, 4×8 sheets give the cleanest single-row layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sheets of T1-11 do I need for a shed?
Lay it out wall by wall. For a 12×12 shed with 8-foot walls, each wall is one row of 4×8 sheets: 12 feet ÷ 3.96 feet net = 4 sheets per wall, so four walls need about 16 sheets, plus a couple for gables and breakage. The calculator does this for every wall, using the shiplap net width (~47.5 inches of a 48-inch sheet) so you don't come up short at the corners.
Why doesn't a 4x8 T1-11 sheet cover a full 4 feet?
Because T1-11 has a shiplap edge — a rabbeted lip that overlaps the next sheet so the vertical joint sheds water. That lap eats about half an inch, so a 48-inch sheet only exposes about 47.5 inches of wall. Over a long wall it adds up: you get one extra column roughly every 8 sheets compared with naive 4-foot math, which is exactly the shortfall the layout accounts for.
Do I need Z-flashing with T1-11?
Yes, at every horizontal butt joint. Any wall taller than one sheet (over 8 feet with 4×8, over 9 with 4×9) has a horizontal seam, and panels are never stacked tight — you install Z-flashing (a metal drip cap) so the upper panel laps over it and water sheds out over the lower panel. The calculator counts Z-flashing by the full wall width for each extra row.
What thickness of T1-11 should I use?
It follows your stud spacing. IRC requires a minimum 11/32-inch panel on studs 16 inches on-center and 19/32-inch on studs 24 inches on-center. Thicker panels (15/32, 19/32, 5/8) are stiffer and hold fasteners better, and are required where the T1-11 also acts as the shear wall — in that case follow the engineered nailing schedule from your plans, not just the siding minimum.
Can T1-11 be both sheathing and siding?
Yes — that's a big part of its appeal for sheds, garages, and outbuildings. Wood structural panel siding per IRC R703.3 can serve as the wall's structural sheathing and its finished siding in a single layer, which is why a plywood-sided shed can skip separate sheathing. On a heated house you still want a water-resistive barrier behind it and attention to insulation and air-sealing.
How much waste should I add for T1-11?
Less than fiber cement — plywood is forgiving and you can often use offcuts. A 3% breakage allowance on top of the column-and-row nesting is plenty for simple rectangular walls like sheds and garages. Gable-heavy or many-opening walls waste more; the calculator adds gable sheets separately and you can round up. Always buy whole sheets and keep the offcuts for gable fill and small pieces.
