Most people size thinset from square footage and come up short. Coverage is really set by the trowel notch, because a deeper notch combs a thicker bed of mortar — so the same 50 lb bag covers far less under big tile than under small.
The notch (and back-buttering) exist to hit a coverage rule: ANSI A108.5 requires the thinset to back at least 80% of the tile — 95% in showers, exteriors, and stone. Comb in one direction and flatten the ridges so they collapse into full contact; any tile with a side 15" or larger also gets a skim coat on its back.
Coverage assumes you picked the right mortar in the first place. Which ANSI class you need depends on the substrate and the exposure — everyday tile over cement board versus large-format, wet, or over an uncoupling membrane.
Calculation Formulas
Divide the tile area (plus a waste allowance) by the coverage a 50 lb bag gives at your trowel notch, then round up. The buy quantity uses the conservative low end of the published coverage range so you never come up short.
Example:
100 sq ft × 1.10 waste ÷ 55 sq ft/bag (1/4"×3/8" notch) = 2 bags.
The trowel notch sets how much mortar is combed onto the substrate. A 1/4"×1/4" notch spreads a thin bed (~75–100 sq ft/bag); a 1/2"×1/2" spreads far more (~35–50 sq ft/bag). This is the single biggest driver of consumption.
Example:
1/4"×1/4": ~90 sq ft; 1/4"×3/8": ~65 sq ft; 1/2"×1/2": ~42 sq ft per 50 lb bag.
The TCNA/NTCA guidance matches notch to tile: 3/16" V for mosaics, 1/4"×1/4" up to 8", 1/4"×3/8" for 8–12", and 1/2"×1/2" or a 3/4" U-notch for large-format. The calculator defaults the notch from your tile size.
Example:
A 12"×24" plank (a side ≥ 15") uses a 1/2" notch and must be back-buttered.
Large-format tile and gauged panels must be back-buttered (a skim coat on the tile back) to reach full mortar contact, which raises consumption 15–20%. The calculator divides coverage by ~1.18 automatically for those tiles.

A 1/2" notch at 42 sq ft/bag drops to about 36 sq ft/bag when back-buttering.
Code requires the tile be backed by at least 80% mortar (95% in wet areas, exteriors, and for natural stone), fully supported at corners and edges. The 95% regime is met by choosing a deeper notch and back-buttering — which is what lowers coverage per bag.

Because larger tile needs a bigger trowel notch (and back-buttering), a bag that covers ~90 sq ft under mosaics may cover only ~35 sq ft under large-format plank. Sizing thinset by area alone, without the notch, is the most common estimating error.

Most people try to size thinset from square footage alone, and that's why they come up short. The real driver is the trowel notch, because it sets how thick a bed of mortar gets combed onto the substrate. A small 1/4" × 1/4" notch lays a thin bed and a single 50 lb bag covers roughly 90 square feet; step up to a 1/2" × 1/2" notch for large tile and the same bag covers only about 40. The notch isn't a free choice — the tile size dictates it. Mosaics take a 3/16" V-notch, tile up to 8" a 1/4" square, 8" to 12" a 1/4" × 3/8", and large-format a 1/2" square or a 3/4" U-notch. Is thinset the same as the mortar for a shower pan?
No. Thinset is an adhesive mortar for bonding tile. A shower pan is built with deck mud (dry-pack mortar bed) — a stiff mix of Portland cement and sand with no adhesive polymer, packed and sloped 1/4" per foot to the drain. They're bought and estimated differently, so this calculator has a separate deck-mud mode: enter the pan area and bed depth and it gives the number of 60 or 80 lb bags of sand/topping mix.
Should I use modified or unmodified thinset over Schluter DITRA?
Over uncoupling and waterproofing membranes like Schluter DITRA or KERDI, the manufacturer often requires unmodified (ANSI A118.1) thinset, because modified mortar can't cure properly when sandwiched between two non-porous surfaces — or an approved mortar such as Schluter ALL-SET. Coverage per notch is similar to modified thinset, but using the wrong class can void the membrane warranty. Always follow the membrane maker's written mortar requirement; the calculator's coverage numbers apply either way.
