A 1/4" square notch covers about 90 square feet a bag; a 1/2" notch under large-format tile covers barely 40. Every coverage figure comes from manufacturer Technical Data Sheets (VersaBond, MAPEI, Laticrete, Schluter), and the buy quantity uses the conservative low end so you never come up short.

It also applies the rules the coverage number depends on: ANSI A108.5 requires at least 80% of the tile backed by mortar (95% in showers, exteriors, and for natural stone), and any tile with a side 15 inches or larger must be back-buttered — which adds 15 to 20% more mortar. Most people size thinset from square footage and come up short. Coverage is really set by the trowel notch, because a deeper notch combs a thicker bed of mortar — so the same 50 lb bag covers far less under big tile than under small.

The notch (and back-buttering) exist to hit a coverage rule: ANSI A108.5 requires the thinset to back at least 80% of the tile — 95% in showers, exteriors, and stone. Comb in one direction and flatten the ridges so they collapse into full contact; any tile with a side 15" or larger also gets a skim coat on its back.

Coverage assumes you picked the right mortar in the first place. Which ANSI class you need depends on the substrate and the exposure — everyday tile over cement board versus large-format, wet, or over an uncoupling membrane.

Why the Trowel Notch Decides How Much Thinset You Need

Most people try to size thinset from square footage alone, and that's why they come up short. The real driver is the trowel notch, because it sets how thick a bed of mortar gets combed onto the substrate. A small 1/4" × 1/4" notch lays a thin bed and a single 50 lb bag covers roughly 90 square feet; step up to a 1/2" × 1/2" notch for large tile and the same bag covers only about 40. The notch isn't a free choice — the tile size dictates it. Mosaics take a 3/16" V-notch, tile up to 8" a 1/4" square, 8" to 12" a 1/4" × 3/8", and large-format a 1/2" square or a 3/4" U-notch. On top of that, ANSI A108.5 sets the minimum mortar contact: 80% for a dry interior floor or wall, but 95% for anything in a shower, outdoors, or in natural stone — met by using a deeper notch and back-buttering the tile. Back-buttering (a skim coat on the back of the tile) is mandatory once any side reaches 15 inches, and it adds 15 to 20% more mortar, which this calculator figures in automatically. Coverage numbers are always "for estimating" on the bag, so the smart move is to buy the conservative amount, mix only what you can set before it skins over, and pull a tile now and then to confirm you're actually hitting the coverage the code requires.

How much thinset do I need?

It depends far more on your trowel notch than on the square footage. A 50 lb bag of standard modified thinset covers roughly 90 sq ft with a 1/4" × 1/4" notch, about 65 sq ft with a 1/4" × 3/8" notch, and only about 40 sq ft with a 1/2" × 1/2" notch under large tile. As a rule of thumb: for 100 sq ft of 12" tile at a 1/4" × 3/8" notch you need about 2 bags plus 10% waste. How many square feet does a 50 lb bag of thinset cover?

At the common notches, a 50 lb bag of standard modified thinset covers about 75–100 sq ft with a 1/4" × 1/4" square notch, 55–80 sq ft with a 1/4" × 3/8" square notch, 35–50 sq ft with a 1/2" × 1/2" notch, and 25–47 sq ft with a 3/4" U-notch. The range comes from manufacturer Technical Data Sheets (VersaBond, MAPEI Ultraflex, Laticrete 253/254) and varies with substrate flatness and technique. Larger notches lay a thicker bed, so they cover less. The calculator uses the low end for the buy quantity.

What size trowel do I need for my tile?

Match the notch to the tile: a 3/16" V-notch for mosaics, a 1/4" × 1/4" square notch for tile up to 8", a 1/4" × 3/8" for 8" to 12" tile, and a 1/2" × 1/2" square or a 3/4" U-notch for large-format tile (13" and up). The bigger the tile, the deeper the notch — and any tile with a side of 15" or more must also be back-buttered. This calculator sets the recommended notch from your tile size automatically, and you can override it.

Do I need to back-butter large tile, and how much extra thinset is that?

Yes. ANSI/TCNA practice requires back-buttering — a skim coat of thinset on the back of the tile — for any tile with a side 15" or larger, and for all gauged porcelain panels, to achieve full mortar contact. Back-buttering raises thinset consumption by about 15 to 20%, so a bag that would cover 42 sq ft trowel-only covers closer to 36 sq ft. The calculator adds this allowance automatically whenever you select a large-format tile.

What is the 80% vs 95% coverage rule?

ANSI A108.5 requires that the tile be backed by mortar over at least 80% of its area for dry interior floors and walls, and at least 95% for wet areas (showers, tub surrounds), exteriors, and natural stone — fully supported at the corners and edges. Gauged porcelain panels (A108.19) need 85% in any single square foot. You hit the higher percentage by using a deeper notch and back-buttering, which uses more thinset. Selecting a wet area in the calculator steps the recommended notch deeper to meet the 95% rule.

Is thinset the same as the mortar for a shower pan?

No. Thinset is an adhesive mortar for bonding tile. A shower pan is built with deck mud (dry-pack mortar bed) — a stiff mix of Portland cement and sand with no adhesive polymer, packed and sloped 1/4" per foot to the drain. They're bought and estimated differently, so this calculator has a separate deck-mud mode: enter the pan area and bed depth and it gives the number of 60 or 80 lb bags of sand/topping mix.

Should I use modified or unmodified thinset over Schluter DITRA?

Over uncoupling and waterproofing membranes like Schluter DITRA or KERDI, the manufacturer often requires unmodified (ANSI A118.1) thinset, because modified mortar can't cure properly when sandwiched between two non-porous surfaces — or an approved mortar such as Schluter ALL-SET. Coverage per notch is similar to modified thinset, but using the wrong class can void the membrane warranty. Always follow the membrane maker's written mortar requirement; the calculator's coverage numbers apply either way.
