Eave run = total horizontal length under the overhang (both sides of the house). Overhang depth = wall to fascia, typically 12"–24".

Calculation Formulas
The horizontal underside of the overhang is the eave run times the overhang depth.
Example:
160 LF eave × 24" overhang → 160 × 2 = 320 sq ft.
Panels nest end to end and are cut to the overhang depth, so coverage is the net (locked) width times the stock length.
Example:
12" panel (11.5" net) × 12 ft → 11.5 sq ft per panel.
Waste-adjusted soffit area divided by per-panel coverage, rounded up.
Example:
320 × 1.12 ÷ 11.5 = 31.2 → 32 panels.
Fascia caps the eave and the rake (gable) edges; divide by the stock board length.
Example:
(160 + 60) × 1.12 ÷ 16 = 15.4 → 16 boards.
The soffit floats between an F-channel at the wall and a J-channel (or the fascia sub-face) at the outer edge.
Example:
160 LF eave → 160 LF each of F- and J-channel ≈ 14 pieces of 12-ft stock each.
Trim nails at ~12–16" o.c. along channels and fascia plus panel field nails, at roughly 180 aluminum trim nails per pound.
Example:
~950 nails → 6 lb of aluminum trim nails.

How do I calculate how much soffit I need?
Soffit is an area take-off: multiply the total eave run (the horizontal length under your overhang) by the overhang depth. A 160-foot eave with a 24-inch (2-foot) overhang is 320 square feet of soffit. Then divide by the net coverage of your panel — a nominal 12-inch vinyl panel covers about 11.5 inches once the lock is engaged, so a 12-foot panel covers roughly 11.5 square feet. Add 10–15% waste for cuts and miters.
What's the difference between soffit and fascia?
Soffit is the horizontal underside of the roof overhang — the panel you see when you look up under the eave. Fascia is the vertical board that caps the ends of the rafters along the eave and rake, and it's what the gutter attaches to. This calculator sizes both: soffit by area (eave × overhang) and fascia by linear foot along every eave and gable edge, divided into stock boards.
How much fascia board do I need?
Fascia runs along the eaves and the rake (gable) edges, so add both runs together and divide by your board length. Fascia boards and brake-formed aluminum coil come in 12- and 16-foot lengths; 16-foot minimizes seams. Add waste for corner miters. Remember the metal or vinyl fascia is a cladding — it needs a solid 1× or 2× wood sub-fascia behind it to carry the gutter and the soffit edge.
What is F-channel and J-channel and how much do I need?
The soffit panel floats between two channels: F-channel mounts on the wall (against the frieze) to receive the inner edge, and J-channel (or the fascia sub-face) terminates the outer edge. Each run is roughly equal to the eave length, so a 160-foot eave needs about 160 linear feet of each — roughly fourteen 12-foot pieces per channel type. The panels are never face-nailed tight so they can expand and contract.
Should I use vented or solid soffit?
Vented soffit is the intake half of attic ventilation and is effectively required in cold and mixed climates to prevent ice dams and trapped moisture — pair it with ridge or high-gable exhaust and keep the airflow path clear with insulation baffles at the top plate. How much waste should I add for soffit and fascia?
Twelve percent is a good default for straight eaves. Bump it to 15% or more on hip roofs and cut-up eaves, where every corner needs a mitered panel and a channel return, and where you're cutting soffit panels to the overhang depth from 12-foot stock. Aluminum coil fascia brake-formed on site wastes less than pre-cut boards. Always round up to whole panels, boards, and channel pieces.
