This free drain slope calculator answers the question every drain run starts with: how much fall does this pipe need? The famous answer — a quarter inch per foot — is only right some of the time. Under the International Plumbing Code, pipes 3 to 6 inches may run at an eighth inch per foot; under the Uniform Plumbing Code, a quarter inch per foot is the default for every size, and the reduced slope on 4-inch-plus pipe requires your inspector's explicit approval. Which code applies is a state-by-state fact, and for a 60-foot sewer run it is the difference between 7.5 and 15 inches of drop.

When the run can't make slope

If the pass/fail check fails, gravity has run out — the fixes are a sewage ejector or grinder pump (standard for basement bathrooms below the sewer), relocating the tie-in, or re-routing the run. Do not flatten the slope below code minimum: the pipe will drain, but solids will strand and clog it chronically.

What is the proper slope for a drain pipe?

Under the IPC: 1/4 inch per foot for pipe 2-1/2 inches and smaller, 1/8 inch per foot for 3-to-6-inch pipe, and 1/16 inch per foot for 8-inch and larger (IPC 704.1). Under the UPC: 1/4 inch per foot for ALL sizes by default — 1/8 inch on 4-inch-plus pipe is allowed only with your inspector's approval (UPC 708.0). Which code applies depends on your state, and for a 4-inch sewer the two codes genuinely disagree.

Is 1/8 inch per foot enough for a 4 inch sewer line?

In IPC states, yes — 1/8 inch per foot is the code minimum for 3-to-6-inch pipe, and a 4-inch drain at that slope still carries 180 drainage fixture units, several times a whole house. In UPC states the default is 1/4 inch per foot and the reduced slope needs written AHJ approval. Over 60 feet that's 7.5 vs 15 inches of drop — on a flat lot, the code lineage can decide whether gravity works at all.

Can a drain have too much slope?

Yes — it's a real defect, not a bonus. Much past 1/4 inch per foot on solids-carrying drains, the liquid outruns the solids and leaves them stranded in the pipe, causing chronic clogs. On steep sites the correct design is code-slope horizontal runs stepped down with 45-degree fittings or vertical drops, not one continuously steep line. (Vertical piping is fine — solids and liquid fall together; it's the in-between slopes that strand solids.)

What size drain pipe does a toilet need?

At least 3 inches — any drain carrying a water closet must be 3-inch minimum, regardless of fixture-unit math. More than two toilets on one horizontal branch requires 4-inch. A modern 1.6-gpf toilet counts as 3 drainage fixture units under the current IPC (older references say 4 — that's a code-edition difference), and a full bathroom group is 5 DFU, which fits comfortably on a 3-inch branch.

How do I measure drain slope during installation?

A 4-foot level with a 1/2-inch block under one end reads level when the pipe is at 1/8 inch per foot; a 1-inch block gives 1/4 inch per foot. Torpedo levels with slope vials read it directly. For long runs, a laser level or string line with measured drops at each support beats chasing a bubble. Support spacing matters too — sagging between hangers creates flat spots (bellies) that hold water no matter what the overall slope says.
