How hardwood take-off differs from vinyl and laminate
Hardwood is bought by the carton like every floor — area, plus a waste factor, divided by the coverage on your box. But NWFA counts waste differently: the baseline 5% is just for culling out defective boards, so you add cut-ends at the walls to reach a realistic ~8–10% (more for wide plank or a diagonal layout).
The real difference is fastening. A nail- or staple-down floor needs cleats or staples counted per square foot — more for narrow strip, fewer for wide plank — plus 15# felt underneath. Glue-down trades fasteners for adhesive by the gallon, and floating engineered trades both for underlayment.
Rows are staggered so end joints never line up, which consumes the off-cuts and is why waste is a range.
Calculation Formulas
Sum each room rectangle; enter an L-shaped room as two rooms.
Example:
A 15 × 12 room + 10 × 10 hall = 180 + 100 = 280 sq ft.
NWFA counts 5% for defect culling; the calculator uses ~8% straight to also cover cut-ends. Wide plank (5"+) adds 2.5%.
Example:
Straight, 5" plank, DIY = 8 + 2.5 + 5 = 15.5%.
Rounded up using the coverage on your box (typically 18–25 sq ft).
Example:
280 × 1.10 ÷ 20 = 15.4 → 16 cartons.
Cleats/staples per sq ft by board width, plus 10% for misfires. Field practice: ~8/sf for 2¼" strip, ~6 for 3¼", ~5 for 5", ~4.5 for 7"+.
Example:
280 sq ft of 3¼" plank × 6 × 1.1 = 1,848 cleats.
15# asphalt-saturated felt as a moisture retarder under nail-down, ~400 sq ft/roll (ASTM D4869).
Example:
280 ÷ 400 = 0.7 → 1 roll.
~40 sq ft/gal mid estimate; verify the TDS (≈30–50 sq ft/gal by trowel and board thickness).
Example:
308 ÷ 40 = 7.7 → 8 gallons.

How much hardwood flooring do I need?
Take your floor area, add a waste factor, then divide by the coverage on your carton (typically 18–25 sq ft) and round up. NWFA counts 5% for defect culling, but add cut-ends to reach about 8–10% for a straight lay — more for wide plank or diagonal layouts. For 280 sq ft at 20 sq ft/box with 10% waste, that's 308 ÷ 20 = 16 cartons.
How many nails or staples per square foot for hardwood?
Field practice runs about 8 fasteners per sq ft for 2¼" strip, 6 for 3¼" plank, and 4.5–5 for 5"+ wide plank, blind-nailed through the tongue every 6–8 inches. Add about 10% for misfires. These are practical estimates, not an NWFA-published constant — the calculator labels them as such.
What waste factor should I use for hardwood?
NWFA's 5% is only a culling allowance for defective boards. Add cut-ends at the walls and most installers use about 8–10% for a straight lay, ~10–12% for diagonal or angled walls, and 10–15%+ for herringbone. Wide plank (5"+) culls more, so add a couple points. The calculator applies these automatically.
Can I install hardwood over concrete?
Engineered hardwood, yes — glued down or floated over a subfloor. Solid 3/4" hardwood can NOT be nailed to concrete and isn't rated to float, so on a slab you either switch to engineered or build a plywood subfloor first. Always test slab moisture (ASTM F2170) before installing.
What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood for install?
Solid 3/4" hardwood is nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor and needs a 3/4" expansion gap and careful acclimation. Engineered wood is more dimensionally stable and can be glued, floated, or stapled — including over concrete and below grade — which is why it's the choice for slabs and basements.
How much does hardwood need to acclimate?
NWFA says acclimate to the home's in-use conditions and verify with a moisture meter — don't just count days. The moisture-content difference between the flooring and the subfloor should be no more than 4% for strip under 3" wide and 2% for plank 3" and wider before you install.
Do I need felt paper under hardwood?
Under a nail-down floor over a wood subfloor, yes — roll out 15# asphalt-saturated felt (ASTM D4869) as a moisture retarder and slip sheet. Glue-down floors use the adhesive as the barrier, and floating floors use a foam underlayment plus a 6-mil vapor barrier over concrete.
