Blade span, mount height, and why bigger is not always better

A ceiling fan works by moving a column of air you can feel, so both the blade span and the mount height matter. Span is matched to room area because a small fan cannot push air across a large room and an oversized fan in a small room is awkward and can feel like a wind tunnel; the ENERGY STAR bands (29–36 in. under 75 sq ft up to 56 in. or two fans over 400 sq ft) are the accepted guide. Height matters because airflow is strongest a few feet below the blades: the sweet spot is blades 8 to 9 feet off the floor, which is why an 8-foot ceiling uses a flush mount (to preserve the 7-foot safety clearance) while taller ceilings drop the fan on a downrod sized by (ceiling − 9) × 12 + 6 inches. Note that flush "hugger" mounts trade some airflow for headroom and are not ENERGY STAR eligible.
