Baseboard runs along the bottom of every wall, so the length is the room perimeter minus the door and cased openings the base dies into. Windows don't come out — the base runs underneath them.
Where two runs meet decides the cut: cope the inside corners so the joint stays tight even on an out-of-square wall, and miter the outside corners. That's where most of the waste allowance goes.
Over a wood or tile floor, a base shoe or quarter round covers the gap and runs the same length as the base. They look similar but aren't interchangeable.
Calculation Formulas
Add up the wall length that gets base, subtract about 3 feet for each door or cased opening (the base dies into the casing) and any baseboard-heater run. Windows are not deducted — base runs beneath them.
Example:
A 12×14 room = 52 LF perimeter − 3 ft (one door) = 49 LF of baseboard.
Add a waste allowance, then divide by the stock length you're buying and round up to whole pieces. Longer stock means fewer seams on long walls.
Example:
49 LF × 1.10 waste ÷ 16 ft = 4 pieces (64 LF purchased).
With only the house square footage, a defensible planning ratio is about 0.30 linear feet of baseboard per square foot of finished floor — derived from a room model, not a published standard. Measure rooms for accuracy.
Example:
2,000 sq ft × 0.30 ≈ 600 LF (honest range 500–700 LF).
Shoe and quarter round run the same length as the baseboard (minus the same door openings). Nail shoe to the baseboard, not the floor, so a wood floor can move.
Example:
49 LF of base ≈ 49 LF of shoe, rounded up to whole pieces.
Studs at 16 inches on center give 0.75 studs per foot; two nails per stud (one high, one low) is about 1.5 nails per linear foot.
Example:
49 LF × 1.5 ≈ 74 finish nails.
A 10.1 oz tube of paintable caulk runs about 55 linear feet at a small (3/16 inch) bead along the top edge. Add a buffer tube for seams and corners.

Baseboard Height by Ceiling
Taller rooms take taller base — but it's a design call
A common convention sizes the baseboard at roughly 7% of the ceiling height, so taller ceilings get taller base. This is a design guideline, not a rule; many designers run shorter. Pick the height you like, then let the calculator size the material.

Why Perimeter Minus Doors — and What "How Much for a 1,500 sq ft House" Really Means
Baseboard is a linear-feet take-off, not an area one: you're wrapping the bottom of the walls, so the number that matters is the room perimeter. From that you subtract roughly three feet for every door or cased opening, because the base stops and dies into the door casing on each side — but you never subtract windows, since baseboard runs continuously beneath them. A 12-by-14 room, for example, has a 52-foot perimeter; take out one door and you're buying about 49 feet of base, plus waste. The trickier question people search is "how much baseboard for a 1,500 or 2,000 square foot house," and the honest answer is that there is no official square-foot factor — it depends entirely on how the floor plan is chopped up. An open plan has far less baseboard per square foot than the same area divided into many small rooms, because every interior partition adds wall. A defensible planning ratio is about 0.30 linear feet of baseboard per square foot of finished floor (roughly 450 feet for a 1,500 square foot home, 600 for a 2,000), but the real range runs 0.25 to 0.35, so we show it as an estimate and steer you to measure room by room before you actually buy. How do I calculate how many pieces of baseboard to buy?
Divide your total linear feet (including waste) by the stock length, then round up to whole pieces. For 54 feet at 16-foot stock, that's 4 pieces (64 feet purchased). Longer stock means fewer seams: MDF and PVC come in 16 and 18-foot lengths that span most walls without a joint, while pine tops out around 16 feet, so a wall longer than that needs a scarf joint. What's the difference between baseboard and trim?
Trim is the umbrella term for all the moulding in a room — baseboard, door and window casing, crown, chair rail, and shoe. Baseboard is specifically the piece that runs along the bottom of the wall at the floor. So baseboard is one type of trim, usually the most common. What size baseboard should I use?
Height is a design choice, not a code rule. A common convention sizes the base at roughly 7% of the ceiling height — so about 3-1/4" to 5-1/4" for an 8-foot ceiling, 5-1/4" to 5-1/2" for 9 feet, and 7-1/4"+ for 10-foot ceilings — but plenty of designers run shorter or taller. The standardized WM profiles map to those heights: WM 623 is 3-1/4", WM 620 is 4-1/4", WM 618 is 5-1/4", and WM 163E7 is 7-1/4". Taller base changes the look and the price per foot, not the linear-foot count.
Should I cope or miter the corners?
Cope the inside corners and miter the outside ones. A coped joint — where one piece is cut to the profile of the other — stays tight even when the corner is a couple degrees out of square, which real walls almost always are; a mitered inside corner opens up as soon as the wall isn't a perfect 90°, and again as the wood shrinks in winter. Outside corners get a roughly 45° miter, glued and pinned. The exception is MDF, which crumbles when coped, so its inside corners are mitered and glued instead. More corners means more waste, which is why the calculator raises the allowance for cut-up rooms.
Do I need base shoe or quarter round too?
Usually, over a wood or tile floor. Base shoe (or quarter round) is the small piece that covers the gap between the baseboard and the floor, and it runs the same length as the baseboard minus the door openings. Nail it to the baseboard, not the floor, so a wood floor can still expand and contract underneath. Over carpet you generally skip it — the carpet tucks against the base.
