Driveway sealcoat application-rate math — gal/sy to sq ft/gal to pails
From rate to pails: 0.12 gal/sy per coat = 75 sq ft/gal; a 600 sq ft driveway at two coats works out to about 4 pails plus a spare.
What this diagram shows
A three-step conversion turning the manufacturer application rate into pails at the store. Step one, the rate every manufacturer TDS and FAA airport spec agrees on: mixed sealer at about 0.12 gallons per square yard per coat. Step two, convert — one square yard is 9 square feet, so 9 divided by 0.12 equals 75 square feet per gallon. Step three, apply it to a real 20 by 30 foot, 600 square-foot two-car driveway with two coats: the first coat covers about 275 square feet per pail (2.2 pails) and the second coat about a third less material (1.5 pails), totaling 3.7, rounded to 4 pails plus one spare, so 5 pails.
