Detached subpanel — 4-wire feeder with grounds and neutrals separated
A detached subpanel needs a 4-wire feeder, neutrals and grounds kept separate, its own ground rods, and a disconnect at the building.
What this diagram shows
A house main panel feeds a detached garage subpanel through a 4-wire feeder (two hots, a neutral, and a ground). At the subpanel the neutral bar is isolated (floating) and the ground bar is bonded to the enclosure, and the building has its own two ground rods. A checklist: 4-wire feeder (250.32(B)), neutrals and grounds separate at the sub, a grounding electrode at the building (250.32(A)), and a disconnect at the building (225.31).
