HardiePlank butt joints — off-stud, flashed, staggered
HardiePlank butt joints follow three rules at once: the seam lands off-stud between studs, a 6″ strip of flashing sits behind it and laps the course below (no caulk in the joint), and each joint is staggered from the joint in the course above.
What this diagram shows
An elevation of several HardiePlank courses with studs shown dashed behind. A butt joint in one course lands off-stud, between two studs, with a 6-inch-wide strip of flashing behind the seam that laps the course below and is never caulked. A second butt joint in a course above is staggered horizontally so the seams do not line up.
