The vinyl siding accessory system — where starter strip, J-channel, corner posts and trim go

Vinyl is a full system: starter strip, J-channel, corner posts, undersill/utility trim, and finish trim each wrap a specific edge and are counted in linear feet — not just the panels.

What this diagram shows

A gable-wall elevation with every vinyl accessory highlighted in blue and tied by number to a key: (1) starter strip along the bottom of every wall, (2) J-channel wrapping the window, the door, and both gable rakes, (3) corner posts running the full height of each corner, (4) undersill or utility trim under the window sill and along the top course, and (5) finish trim at the top of the wall. Each accessory is counted in linear feet, then converted to stock-length pieces. Panels alone are not weathertight — every cut edge has to lock into one of these.
