Doors, Windows & Trim

Baseboard layout order — where to start and which way to cope

In plan view the order is simple: start on the wall opposite the door with a piece square-butt on both ends, then work one direction around the room, butting each next piece into the far corner and coping it over the one before — so every cope faces the same way.

What this diagram shows

A top-down plan of a room showing baseboard install order. The four walls are numbered 1 to 4. The start piece is on the wall opposite the door and is square-butt on both ends. A curved arrow shows working one direction around the room, and each following piece butts into the far corner and is coped over the piece before it, so all copes face the same way. A door gap with a swing arc marks the wall that is done last.
