Window code rules — bedroom egress (R310) and safety glazing (R308)
Two window code rules the calculator flags: a bedroom egress window needs a net clear opening ≥ 5.7 sq ft, ≥ 24″ high, ≥ 20″ wide, with the sill ≤ 44″ off the floor (R310); and tempered glass is required near doors, low panes, and wet/stair areas (R308).
What this diagram shows
Two window code requirements. Left, the bedroom emergency escape and rescue opening per IRC R310: the net clear opening must be at least 5.7 square feet (5.0 at grade), the clear height at least 24 inches, the clear width at least 20 inches, and the sill no more than 44 inches above the floor. Right, safety (tempered) glazing per IRC R308: glass within 24 inches of a door, panes with a bottom edge less than 18 inches off the floor, and glass near tubs, showers, and stairs must be tempered.
