Large-format tile offset limit — stagger ≤33%, not 50%, to avoid lippage
Any tile edge ≥15″ is large-format. Stagger it ≤33% of the tile length (not a 50% brick bond) so the joint stays off the slightly crowned center — otherwise you get lippage. Set with medium-bed mortar at 95% coverage.
What this diagram shows
Two plan views and a joint section compare laying large-format plank tile two ways. Large tiles bow slightly upward at their center within allowable warpage. A 50 percent brick-bond offset drops the next tile’s end against the high center of its neighbor, leaving a raised lip you feel underfoot. An offset of 33 percent or less keeps the joint off the crown so the tiles sit flush. Any tile with an edge of 15 inches or more is large-format and must be set with medium-bed mortar at 95 percent coverage over a substrate flat to one-eighth inch in ten feet.
