Compare like tiers and the installed cost overlaps almost entirely — figure roughly $4–$12 per square foot installed for LVP and $3–$13 for laminate, with most mid-grade jobs of either landing around $5–$8. Materials alone run about $2–$7 for LVP and $1–$6 for laminate, so laminate is genuinely cheaper at the entry level, while the two converge as you climb into rigid-core SPC vinyl and thick AC4/AC5 laminate.

💧 Water: The Decision Most Rooms Come Down To

This is the real fork. LVP is built on a waterproof PVC core — the plank itself will not swell, rot, or delaminate if it gets wet, which is why it dominates bathrooms, below-grade basements, laundries, and kitchens. Laminate is built on a high-density fiberboard (HDF) wood core: it's water-resistant on top, but once water works into the seams the core swells and that damage is permanent — the board has to be replaced, not dried out.

"Waterproof" describes the plank, not the room. Water still travels through the seams to the subfloor, where it can sit and grow mold under any floating floor. And the fine print backs this up: even "waterproof" laminate warranties (e.g. Pergo WetProtect) cover topical spills, pet accidents, and wet-mopping — but explicitly exclude flooding, plumbing failures, and appliance leaks (icemakers, dishwashers, washers). Neither floor is a substitute for fixing a leak.

🔬 Wear Ratings: Mil and AC Are Not the Same Number

The single most misread spec in this comparison. LVP durability is quoted as a wear-layer thickness in mil (thousandths of an inch): ~6–8 mil for light use, 12 milstandard residential, 20 mil for pets and heavy traffic, 28+ for light commercial. Laminate durability is quoted as an abrasion class, AC1–AC5 (the European EN 13329 scale) — AC3 for residential, AC4–AC5 for heavy or light-commercial traffic.

These measure different things and cannot be cross-converted — mil is the thickness of vinyl's clear top coat; AC is a resistance-to-abrasion cycle rating for laminate's melamine surface. In North America the laminate standard is NALFA LF-01 (14 tests, four end-use levels); AC is a European marketing metric. Practically: for scratch resistance in a dry room, a good AC4–AC5 laminate surface is harder than most vinyl; for pets plus moisture, a 20-mil waterproof LVP wins.

🔇 Feel, Sound & Subfloor

  • Feel & sound. LVP — especially WPC or attached-pad — is softer, warmer, and quieter underfoot. Laminate is harder and can sound hollow; a quality underlayment (where the product allows one) reduces it.
  • Subfloor flatness. Both floating floors want a flat subfloor — a common spec is 3/16" over 10 ft. Rigid vinyl telegraphs bumps and can dent over voids; laminate clicks can gap or peak over waves. Budget for self-leveling if the slab is out.
  • Underlayment. Many rigid SPC/WPC vinyls come with an attached pad and disallow a separate added underlayment (double-cushion voids the warranty). Laminate is commonly paired with an acoustic/vapor underlayment — which is also how it hits condo sound ratings (below).

☀️ Radiant Heat & Direct Sun

Both can go over radiant heat if the product is rated for it, with a common ceiling of about 85°F surface temperature — run the system in before install and ramp it slowly afterward. In strong direct sun, vinyl can expand or discolor (SPC is more dimensionally stable than WPC), while laminate is generally reported to hold color better but its wood core is unhappy in a humid, sun-baked sunroom. 📋 Standards, Emissions & Condo Sound Rules

  • Formaldehyde (laminate only). Laminate's wood core must meet EPA TSCA Title VI / CARB Phase 2 formaldehyde limits and carry a compliance label. LVP has no wood core, so the rule doesn't apply — though quality vinyl can still be FloorScore-certified for low VOC emissions. Look for FloorScore on either.
  • Laminate performance (NALFA LF-01). The North American laminate standard certifies to Residential / Light Commercial / Commercial / Heavy Commercial across 14 tests — a more complete quality signal than the AC number alone.
  • Condo / apartment sound (IBC 2021 §1207). Floor assemblies between units must hit an impact-sound rating of IIC ≥ 50 (labs commonly demand 55–60+). Because most vinyl can't add a separate underlayment, laminate plus a high-end acoustic underlay is often the easier path to the number — check your HOA rules before you buy.

  • Bathroom, basement, laundry, mudroom → LVP (waterproof core survives spills and slab humidity).
  • Kitchen → LVP (dishwasher/fridge/ice-maker leak risk).
  • Big dogs / heavy pet traffic → LVP with a 20-mil wear layer.
  • Dry bedrooms, living rooms, hallways → laminate (harder surface, most convincing wood look).
  • Tightest budget → laminate (lowest entry material cost).
  • Condo needing a high sound rating → laminate + acoustic underlay (vinyl usually can't add one).
  • One continuous floor from a wet room into a dry one → LVP (glue-down or floating handles both).
