It then picks the lightest panel that legally spans your rafter or truss spacing, using the IRC span table that lists two spans for every panel: one with panel edge support and a shorter one without.
That distinction is the whole reason 7/16-inch OSB became the residential default. On 24-inch on center trusses, a 3/8-inch 24/0 panel is allowed only if you add edge support, because it spans just 20 inches unsupported. A 7/16-inch 24/16 panel spans 24 inches either way. The calculator shows you both paths and counts the H-clips if you take the lighter one.
It also reflects a change many crews have missed: the 2021 IRC tightened roof field nailing from 12 inches on center to 6 for 8d common and RSRS-01 nails, following the higher roof loads in ASCE 7-16. A roof nailed to the old 6-and-12 habit now fails inspection in jurisdictions on the current code. In high-wind areas the perimeter zones tighten further, to 4 inches on center within 48 inches of edges and ridges and on all gable end framing.

Framing
Rafter or truss spacing sets the minimum panel span rating.
Edge support is clips, blocking or tongue-and-groove edges. Without it, the panel has to span further on its own, which pushes you to a heavier panel.
Wind and edges
High-wind areas tighten the nailing near roof edges, ridges and gable ends.
Calculation Formulas
Sheathing is counted on the true sloped area of the roof, never the footprint. A 4×8 panel covers 32 sq ft, and panels are sold whole, so the result always rounds up.
Example:
2,400 sq ft sloped area at 10% waste = 2,640 ÷ 32 = 83 panels.
Each span rating carries two roof spans: one with panel edge support and a shorter one without. The calculator picks the lightest panel that spans your rafter spacing under the edge-support condition you choose.
Example:
24 in. o.c. without edge support needs a 24/16 panel (7/16 in.), since a 24/0 panel spans only 20 in. unsupported.
A roof panel is laid with its 8 ft dimension across the rafters, so its two 4 ft edges land on rafters and its 8 ft edges span between them. Nails therefore run in lines down each rafter the panel crosses, at edge spacing on the two edge rafters and field spacing on the rafters between.
Example:
24 in. o.c. at 6 in. edge / 6 in. field: 5 rafter lines × 9 nails = 45 nails per panel.
Older editions allowed 12 in. field spacing on roof sheathing. The 2021 IRC tightened it to 6 in. for 8d common and RSRS-01 nails, following the higher roof loads in ASCE 7-16. The 12 in. field spacing survives only for 10d common or 8d deformed shank nails. Walls and subfloors kept 6 and 12.

The same panel that took 33 nails under the old rule now takes 45.
Where the ultimate design wind speed exceeds 130 mph in Exposure B or 110 mph in Exposure C, the nailing tightens to 4 in. on center in the perimeter zones. This is the area where uplift is highest and where roofs come apart first.
Example:
At 24 in. o.c., a panel in the tightened zone takes about 65 nails instead of 45.
H-clips provide the edge support that lets a lighter panel span the framing. They go in the unsupported 8 ft joints between panel rows, one per rafter bay, so the count depends on framing spacing rather than on panel count alone.
Example:
At 24 in. o.c., each 8 ft joint crosses 4 bays, so plan roughly 3 to 4 clips per panel.

The single biggest regional difference
The 2021 IRC tightened roof field nailing from 12 in. to 6 in. on center for 8d common and RSRS-01 nails. A jurisdiction still on the 2015 or 2018 IRC enforces the older 12 in. spacing, so the same roof takes noticeably fewer nails there.

The span table is a structural minimum. Under heavy ground snow loads, designers often specify a heavier panel or closer framing than the table minimum, and a thicker deck resists the deflection that telegraphs through shingles.

Trussed roofs are usually 24 in. on center, which is the spacing that makes 7/16 in. the default panel. Stick-framed roofs at 16 in. o.c. allow a thinner panel and rarely need clips.

When the deck has to come off
The base IRC does not require removing an existing deck at re-roof. A deck must be replaced when panels are delaminated, water-damaged, warped or rotted, or where the shingle manufacturer will not warrant the substrate. Some states add their own re-roof fastening requirements.

Span Ratings, Edge Support and the 2021 Nailing Change
The two numbers stamped on a panel — 24/16, 32/16, 48/24 — are the maximum roof span over the maximum floor span, in inches. A 32/16 panel spans 32 inches as a roof deck and 16 inches as a subfloor. The IRC span table gives each rating two roof numbers, because a panel edge that is supported carries more than one that hangs between rafters. Panel edge clips, solid blocking and tongue-and-groove edges all count as support; the code calls for one clip midway between supports, or two where supports are 48 inches or more apart. On a typical 24-inch on center truss roof, each 8-foot panel joint crosses four bays, so the clip count runs three to four per panel rather than the one per sheet people often assume. The fastening changed meaningfully in the 2021 IRC: roof panels take 8d common or RSRS-01 ring shank nails at 6 inches on center at both the edges and the intermediate supports, where older editions allowed 12 inches in the field. The 12-inch field spacing survives only for 10d common or 8d deformed shank nails. How many sheets of plywood do I need for a roof?
Divide the sloped roof area by 32 square feet per 4×8 sheet and add waste. A 2,400 square foot roof needs about 75 sheets before waste, and 83 at a 10% allowance for a simple gable. Use the sloped area, not the footprint — a 6/12 roof is about 12% larger than the floor beneath it, and a 12/12 roof is 41% larger.
How thick should roof sheathing be at 24 inches on center?
