A horizontal drain needs to fall ΒΌ inch per foot β that's the standard slope for pipes 2Β½ inches and smaller under the IPC, and for all sizes under the UPC. π The ΒΌ-inch-per-foot rule
Drainage pipe isn't pressurized β it moves waste by gravity, so it has to tilt downhill. The industry baseline is ΒΌ inch of drop for every horizontal foot of pipe, which works out to about a 2% grade. That slope carries water fast enough to sweep solids along with it without running so fast that the water leaves the solids behind.
For a run, the math is simple: total fall = run length Γ slope. A 24-foot run at ΒΌ inch per foot drops 6 inches from the start of the pipe to the end. You measure that fall hub to hub β the difference in height between the two ends β and it's the number that decides whether your pipe actually fits under the floor or reaches the sewer at the right depth.
The fall has to physically fit. A long run at ΒΌ inch per foot can drop a lot β 40 feet is 10 inches of fall. On a shallow crawlspace or a flat lot, that's often why a bigger pipe (which the IPC lets you slope more gently) or a shallower code slope becomes necessary.
π Slope by pipe size (IPC)
Under the International Plumbing Code (IPC Table 704.1), the minimum slope decreases as the pipe gets bigger, because a larger pipe carries the same flow at a lower depth and velocity:
- 2Β½ inches and smaller: ΒΌ inch per foot
- 3 to 6 inches: β inch per foot
- 8 inches and larger: 1/16 inch per foot
These are minimums β you can always run a small pipe steeper up to the over-slope limit below. Note that β inch per foot on a 4-inch building drain is common precisely because the alternative β ΒΌ inch per foot over a long run β would drop the pipe too deep before it reaches the sewer.
β οΈ Why over-sloping clogs drains
This is the counterintuitive part. People assume steeper is always safer β more slope, faster drainage, fewer clogs. It's the opposite past a point. When a pipe is too steep, the liquid runs off ahead of the solids, leaving toilet paper and waste stranded on the pipe wall to dry out and build up. The result is a βdryβ blockage in a pipe that looks like it should drain beautifully.
That's why ΒΌ inch per foot is a sweet spot, not just a minimum, for small pipe. On a steep site, you don't run the pipe at the hill's pitch β you keep each horizontal section at the code slope and take the extra elevation in vertical drops (45Β° offsets or stacks) between the level runs.
π IPC vs UPC
The two model codes handle slope differently. The IPC scales the minimum down as pipe grows (ΒΌ β β β 1/16). The UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code, Β§708.0) keeps ΒΌ inch per foot as the default for every size, and only lets 4-inch-and-larger pipe drop to β inch per foot with the local inspector's (AHJ) approval β don't assume it, get it in writing.

π½ Capacity, fixture units, and toilets
Slope and diameter together set how much a drain can carry, measured in drainage fixture units (DFU) β a normalized βloadβ per fixture. A full bathroom group is about 5β6 DFU. From IPC Table 710.1(1), a 3-inch building drain at ΒΌ inch per foot carries 42 DFU; a 4-inch at the same slope carries 216. Steeper slope buys a little more capacity, which is the other reason the tables list a value at each slope.
Toilets set a floor on size. Any drain carrying a water closet must be at least 3 inches, regardless of what the DFU math says, and more than two toilets on one horizontal branch requires 4 inches. Don't size a toilet drain purely on fixture units.

Slope small drains at ΒΌ inch per foot; let larger IPC pipe go shallower (β or 1/16) so a long run doesn't drop too deep. Never over-slope β take extra elevation in vertical drops, not a steeper grade. Check that the total fall physically fits your space, that the pipe carries your fixture-unit load, and that toilet drains are at least 3 inches.
