🪨 What “hard water” and “grains” mean

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals are what leave scale on faucets, spots on glasses, film in the shower, and buildup inside your water heater and pipes. Hardness is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) — sometimes reported as parts per million (ppm) on a city water report, where 1 gpg = 17.1 ppm.

The Water Quality Association classes it roughly as: soft under 3.5 gpg, moderately hard 3.5–7, hard 7–10.5, and very hard above 10.5. You get your number from a test kit, a well-water test, or your municipal water-quality report.

A softener's “grain capacity” is the total grains of hardness its resin bed can strip out before it's exhausted and has to regenerate (flush itself with brine). A 32,000-grain unit removes 32,000 grains, then needs to recharge. Sizing is about matching that capacity to how many grains your house throws at it between regenerations.

It's two steps. First, your daily softening load:

people × gallons per person per day × hardness (gpg) = grains removed per day

A reasonable default for daily use is 82 gallons per person (the EPA WaterSense figure, citing USGS national data — better sourced than the 75 gpd many vendor calculators use). Then size the equipment:

daily grains × days between regenerations × 1.25 buffer = required capacity

You want a softener to regenerate roughly every 7 days or so — often enough that the resin doesn't sit exhausted, not so often that you waste salt and water. The 25% buffer covers guests and heavy-use days. Then round up to the next standard retail class (24k, 32k, 40k, 48k, 64k, 80k grains, and so on).

Dissolved (“clear-water”) iron eats into a softener's capacity, and well water often has it. The standard correction is to add about 5 gpg of “compensated hardness” for every 1 ppm of iron before you run the sizing math. So 12 gpg hardness with 2 ppm iron behaves like 22 gpg of load, and the softener has to be sized for that higher number.

Above roughly 1 ppm of iron, a softener alone is usually the wrong tool — plan a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener so the resin isn't constantly fouled. The calculator applies the +5 gpg-per-ppm correction and flags when iron is high enough to warrant separate treatment.

It's tempting to think “buy the biggest, regenerate less.” But sizing is about salt efficiency, not just capacity. A grossly oversized unit that regenerates rarely can let the resin sit fully loaded for long stretches, and a poorly matched one wastes salt and water per regeneration.

The target is a unit big enough to go about a week between regenerations with a modest buffer — big enough to handle a busy day, not so big it's dumping brine to recharge a bed that was barely used. That balance is what the formula lands on.
