Relative humidity is how much moisture the air holds compared to how much it could hold at that temperature. The comfortable, healthy band is roughly 30 to 50%. Go above 50% for long and the consequences stack up: mold and mildew start to grow on walls and in closets, dust mites thrive, wood swells, and moisture condenses on the coldest surfaces — windows, basement walls, cold-water pipes. Below about 30% the air feels dry, and you get static, cracked wood, and irritated skin and sinuses.

Basements and crawlspaces are the usual problem. They're cool, often below grade, and moisture migrates in through the walls and floor — so even a house that's comfortable upstairs can have a damp, musty basement that needs its own dehumidifier.

A few things push the number up beyond the base area-and-dampness figure: multiple occupants, a nearby bathroom or laundry adding moisture, and a washer or dryer in the space. The calculator adds those adjustments so you don't undersize. Undersizing is the common mistake — a unit that's too small runs constantly, never reaches the target humidity, and wears out early.

For a whole damp basement or a persistent problem, a whole-house or high-capacity unit that drains continuously to a floor drain or condensate pump beats a portable one you have to empty by hand. A small portable is fine for a single room or a seasonal problem.

🔄 The 2019 DOE scale shift

This is the part that confuses everyone shopping for a dehumidifier. In 2019 the Department of Energy changed the test conditions used to rate capacity: the test temperature dropped from 80°F to 65°F. Cooler air holds less moisture, so the same machine pulls fewer pints per day at the new test point — and its label number dropped accordingly.

The practical effect: a dehumidifier that was sold as a “70-pint” unit under the old scale is now labeled roughly 50-pint under the new one — it didn't get weaker, the yardstick changed. So an old sizing chart or an older review will tell you to buy a “70-pint” unit for a space that today's label calls 50-pint. 🚱 A dehumidifier can't fix a leak

A dehumidifier pulls water vapor out of the air. It cannot do anything about liquid water — seepage through a foundation wall, a puddle after a rain, groundwater wicking up through the slab, or a plumbing leak. If water is actually coming in, that's a drainage and waterproofing job: grading, gutters and downspouts, a sump pump, or foundation sealing.

Running a dehumidifier against an active water intrusion just masks the symptom while the real problem — and the damage — continues. Fix the water source first, then use a dehumidifier to manage the residual humidity that's left in a basement that's dry but still cool and below grade.
