Epoxy garage floor coating system — layered cross-section with film thickness
A pro garage floor is a stack of coats, not one: an optional moisture primer, a 10-mil base, flake, and a clear topcoat — 3–5× thicker than a water-based kit.
What this diagram shows
A cut section of a coated garage floor from the concrete up: the concrete slab (cured 28 days), an optional moisture-vapor-barrier epoxy primer about 12 mils thick that only goes down when the slab fails a moisture test, a 100%-solids epoxy base or color coat about 10 mils thick (~160 sq ft per gallon), decorative flake broadcast into the wet base, and a polyaspartic clear topcoat 5 to 16 mils thick that locks in the flake. The whole build is over 20 mils — three to five times thicker than a single ~3-mil water-based DIY kit coat, which is why kits are the ones that peel and pick up hot-tire marks.
