How flooring layout affects waste — straight ≈10%, diagonal ≈15%, herringbone ≈17.5%
The same room needs more flooring as the layout gets more angled: straight ≈10% waste, diagonal 45° ≈15%, herringbone ≈17.5%+. The angled patterns throw away a cut at every wall.

Three small square room plans compare the same flooring laid three ways and the extra material each pattern wastes in cuts. Boards run straight across the room waste about 10 percent because most cut-offs from one wall start the next row. A 45-degree diagonal layout wastes about 15 percent because a triangular off-cut is thrown away at every wall. A herringbone layout wastes about 17.5 percent or more because each plank needs two angled cuts and there are off-cuts at every wall and direction change. Waste rises further with complex room shapes and DIY installs.
