Measuring a soffit & fascia take-off — fascia is a length, soffit is an area
Fascia = linear feet of the roof edge; soffit = edge length × overhang width. The two are measured differently, which is why the calculator asks for both the run and the overhang.
What this diagram shows
A roof plan seen from above showing the house footprint and the overhang projected around it. Fascia is the linear feet of the outer roof edge, running all the way around the eaves and rakes. Soffit is the area of the band between the wall and the fascia, equal to the edge length times the overhang width. Each corner adds a short return. So fascia is bought by the linear foot and soffit by the square foot of the overhang band.
