Stone grades by size — #4, #57, #67, #78, #8 (a gradation, not a diameter)
Stone grades are ASTM D448 sieve bands, not diameters. Largest to smallest: #4 ballast (1½″–¾″), #57 (1″–No.4), #67 (¾″–No.4), #78 (½″–No.8), #8 (⅜″–No.8). A lower top-size number is finer, not coarser.
What this diagram shows
A relative-scale ladder of crushed-stone grades from largest to smallest: #4 ballast at 1½ inches down to ¾ inch, #57 at 1 inch down to the No. 4 sieve, #67 at ¾ inch, #78 at ½ inch, and #8 at ⅜ inch down to the No. 8 sieve. The size numbers are ASTM D448 / AASHTO M43 gradation designations — each describes the range of sieve sizes the stone passes, not a single diameter — so a lower top-size number such as #8 is finer, not coarser. #57, the most common drainage and driveway grade, is highlighted, and a one-inch reference bar anchors the scale.
