Roof sheathing — staggered courses, H-clips, and the 2021 nailing change
Stagger panel joints course to course; H-clip any horizontal joint that falls between rafters. The 2021 IRC tightened roof field nailing from 12″ to 6″ o.c. — the same rate as the edges now.
What this diagram shows
A roof deck viewed looking up the slope, with rafters running vertically at 24 inches on center. Two courses of sheathing panels are stacked: the lower course uses two full panels meeting at a center seam, while the upper course uses a cut starter panel, a full panel, and a cut end panel so its seams land two rafter bays away from the lower course's seam — a staggered, running-bond pattern. H-clip symbols mark the horizontal joint between courses at points that fall between rafters, where there is no blocking underneath. A callout contrasts the old 12-inch field nail spacing, marked wrong, against the 2021 IRC's 6-inch field spacing, marked correct, now matching the edge rate.
