Measuring an irregular lawn for sod — the offset method
For a curved lawn, run a centerline, measure widths across it at even intervals, and multiply the summed widths by the interval: (40+30+50) × 10 = 1,200 sq ft. Then subtract beds and driveways and add 5–10% waste.
What this diagram shows
A plan view of a curved lawn with a dashed centerline from point A at the top to point B at the bottom. Perpendicular width measurements are taken across the centerline at even 10-foot intervals — here 40 feet, 30 feet, and 50 feet. The offset-method formula is area equals the sum of the offset widths times the interval, so (40 plus 30 plus 50) times 10 equals 1,200 square feet. This is how extension services recommend measuring a curvilinear lawn that is not a simple rectangle before subtracting non-grass areas and adding waste.
