This is sheet-layout math, not plank coursing. Vertical fiber-cement panels (HardiePanel, Allura, Nichiha) install as full 4-ft-wide sheets, so the calculator counts columns across each wall and rows up it, which captures the rip cuts at the ends far better than dividing area by sheet size.

Panels butt together with a light gap and get battens over the vertical joints for the board-and-batten look, or reveal trim for a modern open-joint look. Fiber cement is brittle, so a breakage allowance rides on top of the layout count.

Laying out vertical panels

Vertical panels are rigid 4-foot sheets, so you count them the way you install them: columns across the wall and rows up it. That column-and-row count captures the partial sheets you rip at each wall end — waste that dividing area by sheet size quietly misses. Behind the panel, Hardie requires a 3/8-inch capillary break, so the sheet hangs on a rainscreen, never tight to the house wrap.

Layout, Breakage & Rainscreen

Column-and-row layout is more accurate than area math because it counts the partial sheets you actually rip at each wall end. A 5% breakage allowance covers the chips and cracks fiber cement takes when scored, snapped, or dropped. James Hardie requires a minimum 3/8" capillary break (furring or rainscreen mat) behind vertical panels — never hang them tight to the WRB. Cutting fiber cement releases silica dust: use score-and-snap, shears, or a dust-collecting saw with an N95.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a fiber-cement panel calculator different from HardiePlank?

HardiePlank is horizontal lap siding — you calculate boards by coursing and exposure. Fiber-cement PANEL is vertical sheet siding — you calculate full 4×8, 4×9, or 4×10 sheets by laying them out in columns and rows across the wall. Different products, different math. Why count columns and rows instead of dividing by area?

Because sheets are rigid 4-foot-wide units you can't stretch across a wall. A 30-foot wall needs 8 columns (30 ÷ 4 = 7.5, round up), and each column runs full sheets up the height. Column-by-column layout counts the partial sheets you actually rip at the end of every wall, which area division misses. It gives a truer count — and a truer waste picture — than gross square footage ÷ sheet size.

How many 4x8 fiber cement panels do I need?

A 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet, but you don't just divide — you lay them out. For each wall, columns = wall width ÷ 4 (rounded up) and rows = wall height ÷ 8 (rounded up); multiply for that wall's sheets, then add gable sheets and a ~5% breakage allowance. A 9-foot wall needs two rows of 4×8 (with a big rip on the second) — which is exactly why 4×9 or 4×10 sheets are often the better buy on 9- and 10-foot walls.

Do fiber cement panels need a rainscreen gap?

Yes. James Hardie requires a minimum 3/8-inch capillary break behind vertical HardiePanel — furring strips or a rainscreen mat — so water that gets behind the panel can drain and the wall can dry. Do not hang panels tight against the house wrap. In cold and humid climates a full ventilated rainscreen further improves dry-down and joint durability.

How many battens for board and batten?

Battens cover the vertical joints between panels (every 4 feet) plus any field lines at your chosen spacing. At 16-inch on-center, a 30-foot wall has about 23 batten lines; multiply by the wall height for linear feet, then divide by your batten stock length. Center a batten over every panel seam and fasten through to the studs, not just the panel — a batten nailed only to the panel edge will telegraph and loosen.

Is cutting fiber cement dangerous?

The dust is — fiber cement contains crystalline silica, and cutting it releases respirable dust regulated by OSHA (1926.1153). Use the low-dust methods: score-and-snap for straight cuts, fiber-cement shears, or a dust-collecting circular saw with a HardieBlade. Cut outdoors or with vacuum collection and wear an N95 or better. This, plus the weight and brittleness, is why fiber-cement panel is almost always professionally installed.
