Measuring a backsplash — width times the band height, minus only the big openings
Measure each run as width (ft) × band height (in) ÷ 12. The standard band is 18″ counter-to-cabinet. Deduct only large openings (≥1 sq ft); tile around outlets. Then add the pattern waste factor.

A kitchen wall elevation showing how to measure a tile backsplash. The backsplash is the band between the countertop and the upper cabinets, a standard 18 inches tall. Each run is measured as its width in feet times the height in inches divided by twelve to get square feet; a 10-foot run at 18 inches is 15 square feet. Large openings such as a window or a range alcove that are at least one square foot are deducted, but small electrical outlets under one square foot are NOT deducted — you tile around them and the waste factor absorbs the cuts. The net area is then multiplied by one plus the pattern waste factor.
