Cedar shake sidewall — how weather exposure sets bundle coverage, single vs double course
Cedar coverage is driven by weather exposure, not board length. Wider exposure = fewer bundles; double coursing adds an undercourse layer.
What this diagram shows

Coverage per bundle equals 25 square feet times the exposure divided by 5.5 inches: a single course at 5.5 inches yields about 25 square feet per bundle (four bundles to a square), while a double course at 14 inches yields about 64 square feet per bundle. A wider exposure buys fewer bundles, but double coursing also needs an equal count of undercourse shingles beneath.
