How kitchen cabinet linear feet become a cabinet count — 3-inch increments and fillers

Base cabinets = ⌈ base LF × 12 ÷ 24″ avg ⌉, rounded up. Cabinets come in 3″ width steps, so a run rarely hits the wall exactly — 3″ fillers absorb the leftover at each end, and appliance openings (range ~30″, dishwasher ~24″) are subtracted from the cabinet run.

What this diagram shows

A wall elevation showing how the linear footage entered into the calculator becomes a cabinet count. The base cabinet count is the base linear feet times 12 divided by an average 24-inch cabinet width, rounded up. Because cabinets only come in 3-inch width increments, a run almost never adds up to the exact wall length, so a 3-inch filler at each end takes up the leftover and gives doors and drawers clearance in a corner. Appliance openings such as a 30-inch range and a 36-inch sink base are part of the run but are not counted as cabinets. The example fills a 12-foot (144-inch) wall with fillers, base cabinets, a range opening, and a sink base.
