Understanding a countertop layout: edges, seams & overhangs
Three decisions shape a slab job beyond the square footage: which edge profile to run, where the seams are allowed to fall, and how far a seated overhang can reach before it needs a bracket. These engineering-style diagrams cover each one — use the “see the diagram” links beside the inputs above to jump to the figure you need.
The edge-profile diagram matters to the take-off for one concrete reason: a built-up edge is not only a shape, it is extra material. Mitered and waterfall profiles laminate a second strip of slab beneath the front edge, so the calculator has to count that added run of stone on top of the countertop surface area — a simple eased or pencil edge does not. That is why the edge is measured as its own linear-foot line, and why the profile you choose can change how much slab the job consumes.
The seam-placement plan is why the seam warning here depends on the material you choose. Every slab material comes in its own usable length — quartz, granite, and porcelain slabs are sized differently — so the run length at which a seam becomes unavoidable shifts with the material, not the dimensions alone. Forbidden zones are why a fabricator plans seams early: a seam cannot simply land wherever the size limit is reached if that spot falls over a sink, cooktop, or dishwasher, so a long run sometimes has to be seamed at an inside corner instead.
The overhang-support cross-section is why slab thickness is more than a weight question. How far stone can cantilever unsupported scales with its thickness, so a thicker slab reaches farther before it cracks at the cabinet line — the same eating-bar overhang can be self-supporting in one thickness and need a bracket in another. The calculator reads your overhang depth and material thickness together to flag when the take-off should include corbels or hidden steel, instead of treating every overhang the same.
Calculation Formulas
Cabinet depth + front overhang gives counter depth (25-1/4" for kitchen, 22" for vanity). L-shape deducts one corner overlap (counter depth × counter depth); U-shape deducts two — both prevent double-counting where the legs meet.
Example:
L-shape kitchen, 120" + 96" legs at 25.25" deep: (120×25.25 + 96×25.25) ÷ 144 − (25.25² ÷ 144) = 21.04 + 16.83 − 4.43 ≈ 33.4 sq ft net.
NKBA / fabricator standard front overhang: 1-1/4" kitchen, 1" vanity. Cabinet depth: 24" kitchen base, 21" vanity, 24" laundry/bar/desk. Yields 25-1/4" finished kitchen depth.
Example:
24" cabinet + 1.25" overhang = 25.25" finished kitchen counter depth.
Per published yield data: quartz 12%, granite 18%, marble 22%, quartzite 18%, butcher block 12%, solid surface 10%, laminate 12%, concrete 5%. Waste tracks vein-matching, defect rate, and seam yield.
Example:
35 SF kitchen × 1.12 = 39.2 SF of quartz to purchase.
Useful yield (NSI / ISFA): quartz 78%, granite 70%, marble 65%, quartzite 70%, sintered 75%, solid surface 85%, laminate 85%. Standard quartz slab 120 × 55 in (45.83 SF). Jumbo 130 × 65 (58.68 SF). Super-jumbo 138 × 79 (75.7 SF) — pick by longest single piece.
Example:
39.2 SF ÷ (45.83 × 0.78) = 39.2 ÷ 35.75 = 1.10 → 2 standard quartz slabs.
Wall-side edges are NOT counted (butted to wall with silicone bead). Polished perimeter of every undermount sink and finished cooktop opening is counted at the edge rate.
Example:
L-shape with one finished end: 10 + 8 + (1 × 25.25/12) = 20.1 LF. Add island: 4 sides × island perimeter.
Usable slab length is roughly slab L − 2" for blade kerf and edge calibration. AWI §3.3.1.d — every seam must be ≥ 18" from any sink or cooktop cutout. NSI Drawing 17-D-1 — never seam over a dishwasher.
Example:
L-shape 120" + 96" legs in standard quartz (118" usable): each leg fits in one piece, plus 1 inside-corner seam = 1 seam total.
NSI Dimension Stone Design Manual Ch. 17. Overhangs > 8" (2 cm) or > 10" (3 cm) require corbels or hidden steel brackets — typically 18–24" o.c., 4–6" from each end. Steel can carry up to 24" of overhang when designed by a qualified fabricator.
Example:
Island seating overhang of 15" on 3 cm stone exceeds the 10" cantilever — specify steel brackets at 18" o.c.
Tier 1 (eased / pencil / bevel): $0–$8/LF. Tier 2 (bullnose, double bevel, cove): $5–$20. Tier 3 (ogee, Dupont, mitered): $15–$60. Tier 3+ (waterfall): $50–$100/LF or $1,500–$5,000 per project.
Example:
22 LF × $22/LF ogee = $484 edge upcharge over eased baseline.
Industry aggregate (Granite Selection / GW Surfaces / SlabWise): undermount sink $100–$300 (mid $200, includes polish), drop-in $50–$150, cooktop $100–$200, faucet hole $25–$50 each (first hole bundled with sink), accessory hole $20–$50.
Example:
1 undermount + 1 cooktop + 3 extra faucet holes + 1 accessory = $200 + $150 + 3×$40 + $30 = $500.
Density at 3 cm: granite 19, quartz 17, marble 18, quartzite 20, butcher block 4.5, solid surface 5, laminate 5.5, concrete 22 lb/SF. 2 cm scales to ≈ 0.67×.
Example:
35 SF kitchen × 17 lb/SF × 1.0 (3 cm) = 595 lb of quartz on the cabinets.

Sealed natural stone reseal frequency is not the same everywhere. Hard water deposits, UV exposure on uncovered windows, and sustained high humidity all shorten the protective life of penetrating impregnators.

2020 NEC vs. 2023 NEC island/peninsula receptacle changes
The 2023 NEC removed the requirement to install at least one receptacle on every island/peninsula countertop ≥ 12 sq ft. Many states are still on the 2020 NEC (which kept the requirement). Also: regional code amendments may impose stricter GFCI rules around bar sinks and laundry-room counters.

How the slab math works
Net SF is the sum of every leg run × counter depth (cabinet depth + front overhang), minus a corner overlap (counter depth squared) for each inside corner — L-shape deducts one, U-shape deducts two — plus the island length × island depth. SF with waste applies a per-material waste factor (12% quartz, 18% granite, 22% marble, 18% quartzite, 12% butcher block, 10% solid surface, 12% laminate, 5% concrete poured to template). Slabs needed = ⌈ SF with waste ÷ (slab area × yield) ⌉, where yield is 70–85% depending on material. The calculator picks a standard, jumbo, or super-jumbo slab class based on the longest single piece — a 130 in island automatically bumps quartz to jumbo (130 × 65 in), and 138 in goes super-jumbo. Seams are computed per leg plus one per inside corner; AWI §3.3.1.d requires every seam to fall ≥ 18 in from any sink or cooktop cutout.

How do I calculate countertop square footage?
Net square footage equals the sum of every counter leg (run length × counter depth) minus inside-corner overlaps, plus any island. Counter depth is the cabinet depth (24 in for kitchen base, 21 in for vanity) plus the front overhang (1-1/4 in kitchen, 1 in vanity) — so the standard finished kitchen counter depth is 25-1/4 in.
